Chipeque Viewpoint: sunset and sea of clouds above Tenerife

Chipeque is a roadside viewpoint on the TF-24 in Santa Úrsula, on the northern ridge of Tenerife, and it is one of the few places on the island where you can stand above the clouds with Teide in front of you. It works best in the last hour of daylight, when the low cloud that piles against the north coast turns gold and Teide throws its shadow across it. It is free, open at all hours and reachable by car, but it sits high in the mountains: it is colder and windier than the coast, and on a day with high cloud or haze there is simply nothing to see.

Is it worth going today?

Chipeque only pays off when the sky above the ridge is clear. The classic scene needs low cloud stacked below the viewpoint and clean air above it, which is common on trade-wind days in the afternoon. If mid or high cloud is covering the summit, or the haze from the Sahara (calima) is thick, the sunset will be flat and Teide may not be visible at all. Check the conditions for the day before committing to the drive.

What you will see

Looking north-west you get the Orotava valley dropping to the Atlantic, and on cloudy-below days that valley disappears under a white sheet, the mar de nubes. Turn inland and Teide rises above the pine forest. Close to sunset the volcano casts a triangular shadow eastwards, which is the shot most photographers come for.

How to get there

Chipeque sits directly on the TF-24, the mountain road that links La Laguna with the Teide National Park. Coming from the north coast, most drivers reach it via La Orotava or Santa Úrsula; from the south, over the summit through the park. The TF-24 is a slow, winding road, so plan for more time than the distance suggests, and remember it is often in cloud on the way up even when the viewpoint itself is clear above it.

Parking and arriving in time

There is an informal gravel pull-in beside the road with room for a limited number of cars, and no facilities of any kind. On weekends and on evenings with a good forecast it fills well before sunset. Arriving around 45 minutes before sunset gives you a parking space, time to walk to the edge and the whole golden hour. Park fully off the carriageway and use lights when you leave, as the descent is dark and unlit.

Photography

Bring a tripod: the interesting light starts once the sun is on the horizon and continues into blue hour, well past the point where handheld shots hold up. A wide lens covers the cloud sea and Teide together; a longer lens isolates the summit and the shadow. Temperatures drop fast after sunset at this altitude, so a jacket matters more than any accessory.

When to go

Late afternoon into sunset is the reason to come. Sunrise is possible but the light lands behind you. Winter brings crisper air and earlier sunsets; summer afternoons hold the cloud sea more reliably but the sun sets late. Weekdays are far quieter than weekends.

Sunset time and how long to stay

Sunset in Tenerife runs from roughly 18:00 in December to about 21:00 in June, and Chipeque is worth arriving for well before that: the cloud sea lights up first, then the sun drops, then blue hour holds for another twenty minutes with Teide still visible. Octabia shows today’s exact sunset time and the forecast for that hour when you open this page, rather than printing a time here that would be wrong tomorrow.

Names and confusion

You will see it written as Mirador de Chipeque, Chipeque viewpoint or simply Chipeque, and occasionally attached to La Orotava because it overlooks that valley. The pull-in itself is in Santa Úrsula, on the TF-24 between La Laguna and the national park.

Frequently asked questions

Where exactly is Chipeque viewpoint?

On the TF-24 mountain road in the municipality of Santa Úrsula, on the northern ridge of Tenerife, above the Orotava valley and below the Teide National Park.

What time is sunset at Chipeque?

It follows the island sunset, from around 18:00 in midwinter to around 21:00 in midsummer. Open this page and Octabia shows today’s time from the live forecast for the viewpoint itself.

When is the best time to visit Chipeque?

The last hour of daylight, arriving about 45 minutes before sunset. Weekdays are much quieter, and trade-wind afternoons give the best chance of the cloud sea.

Can you see the sea of clouds at Chipeque?

Often, but not always. The viewpoint is high enough to sit above the trade-wind cloud layer, which typically forms against the north of the island. When that layer is present and the sky above is clear you see it; when the whole sky is overcast you do not.

Is Chipeque a good sunset spot?

Yes, it is one of the best known sunset viewpoints in northern Tenerife, because you look west over the valley with Teide beside you. The quality of any given evening depends entirely on cloud level and air clarity.

How do you get to Chipeque and is there parking?

By car on the TF-24, from La Orotava or Santa Úrsula in the north or over the summit from the south. Parking is an informal gravel pull-in beside the road with limited space and no facilities, so it fills up before sunset on good evenings.

Do you need a car?

In practice yes. There is no regular bus service to the viewpoint and it sits on an exposed mountain road.

Is it cold up there?

Noticeably colder than the coast, and windier. Take a warm layer even on a hot day, especially if you stay past sunset.

Live conditions

Live wind, sea and sky values are not printed in this page source, because any number written at build time would be out of date by the time you read it. Octabia loads the current readings when the page opens, always stamped with the real Canary Islands check time.
